The Insulation in Your Attic is Costing You Money!

And you thought your attic insulation was saving you money. After all, insulation reduces heat loss, which saves money. Right? Correct. But many homes are under-insulated, even homes built in the last 10 years.

The Department of Energy recommends a minimum R-value (R stands for resistance) of 38 for attics in our area of North Carolina. The higher the R-value, the more heat loss or gain is slowed. To achieve an R38 rating you'll need 16" of fiberglass insulation. But that's not all you need.

Even if you add more fiberglass insulation you're not stopping the radiant heat. Radiant heat from the sun beats on your roof and heats your attic. On a hot summer day, your attic feels like a sauna.

And what about all those holes in the ceiling where wires, plumbing pipes, recessed light fixtures, and heating/cooling ducts pass through? How about that drafty attic access? You can bet heat is lost and gained through those holes and cracks.
